Q: Do I need a permit to install pavers in San Diego?

Most paver patios in your backyard do not require a building permit. Driveways, walls, and any work in the public right-of-way are different. Driveway replacements and curb cuts typically require permits from the City of San Diego or your local jurisdiction. We pull the permits required for your specific project.

Both can look great. Pavers have two key advantages: if one cracks or stains, you replace that piece instead of the whole slab, and they handle ground movement better because the joints flex. Stamped concrete is a single slab that cracks over time and is hard to repair invisibly.

In most San Diego communities, yes, but architectural approval is required first. HOAs typically want plan sets showing the paver style, color, layout, and how it ties into existing hardscape. We prepare the 3D renderings and plan packages your HOA committee needs.

The sub-base is what your pavers actually sit on. A shallow or improperly compacted sub-base leads to settling, dips, and lifted pavers within a year or two, especially in San Diego’s clay-heavy soils. We excavate to the right depth, install the right aggregate, and compact in lifts so the surface stays level for decades.

Permeable pavers have wider joints filled with aggregate so rainwater drains through the surface into the sub-base instead of running off. They can help meet stormwater requirements on larger projects and reduce pooling. We can recommend permeable systems where they make sense for your site and code requirements.

Pavers are low maintenance but not zero maintenance. Periodic sweeping and rinsing keeps them clean. Sealing every few years protects against staining and helps lock in the joint sand. We provide care instructions at project completion.
